"Preventing Transmission of Infections"

Program Date:  ongoing, web-based self learning.

Program Description: This unique educational module focuses on the modes of disease transmission, explaining the ways diseases or organisms move from one individual to another.  The module also examines the relationship between standard precautions and transmission-based precautions, and emphasizes how these precautions can help protect both the patient and the healthcare personnel from the exposure to an infection.

After completing this learning module, a healthcare worker will be able to:

  1. Describe the elements of disease transmission.
  2. Select and use appropriate personal protective equipment to prevent disease transmission.
  3. Understand the implications of disease transmission on patients, families and others in the healthcare environment.

The information from this module is based on principles outlined in the CDC Isolation Guideline, which describes the modes of disease transmission and matches them with specific strategies for prevention.

Discovery Channel presents "Coughing Robot Spews Flu Germs"
By using ‘Puff Daddy', a patient simulator, Dr. Ruth Carrcio shows how germs are spread.  ‘Puff Daddy' coughs and expels a powder that spreads to others nearby. Then a black light is shown over a person and shows the ‘germs' that land on the person.
