SPHIS Faculty and Students to present at the 44th National Immunization Conference

On November 11-12, 2009, a community-wide H1N1 mass immunization point of dispensing was held in Louisville, KY. During this two day event 19,079 individuals received vaccines. The Louisville Metro Department of Public Health and Wellness (LMDPHW) partnered with the Universityof Louisville (UL) to plan and implement a unique community-wide immunization program held at the UL Papa John’s Cardinal Stadium.

The LMDPHW also worked with public and private schools in Louisville Kentucky to provide on-site H1N1 influenza immunization for students and school staff. They visited a total of 175 schools in Louisville Kentucky including 135 public schools and 40 catholic schools. More than 17,000 students and staff were immunized each week during the three-week process.

The two mass immunization initiatives provided the opportunity to create multiple abstracts. Dr. Ruth Carrico submitted 9 abstracts to be presented at the 44th National Immunization Conference, all of which were accepted.. Faculty and students from the UL School of Public Health and Information Sciences (SPHIS) along with staff from the UL Department of Environmental Health & Safety (DEHS) and the LMDPHW will be traveling to attend the 44th National Immunization Conference in Atlanta, GA on April 19-22, 2010.
